Hackathon

BajtaHack 2017 is the first hackathon with Secure Resource Management (SRM) module technology oriented towards creative innovations on the field of Internet of Things (IoT), and automation of home and surroundings. It will take place on November 25-26 at Faculty of Computer and Information Science (UL FRI). The event is organized by the Laboratory for Data Technologies under the sponsorship of international company u-blox.

We invite all enthusiasts, innovators and people with business ideas in the field of IoT to participate in the hackathon; we especially encourage students and graduates of natural sciences, technical and sociology field. In the interdisciplinary groups participants will get to know new technologies, way of their use and will brainstorm about business opportunities they enable.

SRM modules represent new generation of IoT that is secure, interoperable and easy to use. They follow modern practice of development and secure standards, as they bring RESTful API interface (HTTPS/TLS with authentication over WiFi or Ethernet) to the physical interfaces of sensors and actuators (GPIO, I2C). Direct connectivity of SRM modules to the Internet enables, that applications can be developed in any programming language and deployed to smart phones, personal computers or clouds. All this paves the way towards easy realisation of your IoT goals or business ideas.

For every team at hackathon the following hardware equipment for development will be available:

The hackathon will be organised in teams; we encourage you to form teams of 3 to 5 members in advance before the hackathon. Teams covering the broadest spectre of knowledge are highly encouraged: not only technical, but also non-technical knowledge will be useful. Every team will chose their idea, technology, programming language and a way of presentation. We will take care of food and beverages.

Prizes fond is EUR 2500 for financial reward and over EUR 3500 for rewards in a form of hardware equipment. Every team that will submit and present their product will be rewarded with the package of hardware that was used for the development. Best three teams will also receive an extra financial reward:

Smart house

Goal: A smart house for a better life.

Would not be nice to get into an apartment where lights switch on and off automatically, a heater and an air-conditioner adjusting the temperature and humidity just before we arrive, a boiler heating water to be ready for a refreshing shower after a hard work, an alarm alerting us for emergency, and even more? The SRM technology enables for making this kind of applications. At this challenge we encourage development of smart algorithms by utilizing machine learning for an automatic adaptation of house according to the residents’ needs. Project design and choice of technology is totally in your hands.

Help the janitor

Goal: Automatization of the janitor's routine tests.

Janitor of residential and business objects likes to watch football games, but, unfortunately, he always misses the beginning of the first half-time. He found out that if he could shorten the time of the controlling procedure of the building, then he would be able to come home just in time for the game. He has heard for the IoT, but he does not know how to automate the patrol. His responsibility is to switch off the lights in all rooms, checking for open windows, and setting the alarm system against thefts. He would be happy to hear from you about the solutions for these problems and for any other ideas and products which could help him to take better care of the building.

FRIstyler

Goal: All other efforts.

We are looking forward to hear your ideas with business potential and other ways of using the SRM module.

Frequently Asked Questions

Team size?

We propose teams in the size of 3-5 people. The product implementation, as well as its presentation and business idea will be evaluated. We encourage you to form as interdisciplinary teams as possible.

Who will be with me in the group?

Groups will be formed at registration, so it will not happen that anyone will stay alone.

Who will own the product?

You will publish the source code, short usage manual and the presentation of your product on GitHub under the AGPL-3.0 licence.

What do I need with me?

Laptop and full bowl of IoT ideas. If you want, you can also bring additional gear, sensors or actuators. In case you would want to take a nap, please bring a sleeping bag, blanket or mat. :)

Responsibility

You are a attending this even at one's own risk. Under age participants should bring your parents consensus.
